all in all, these things are starting to look sick. however i have an issue with the brand- im not sure where the brand is going. there's a cruiser bike, the accessories include drome drops, the fixed gear setup is more of an economy trick setup; it's a very confusing brand. someone enlighten me.

ASK JMIK #1: strap debate; an insight into foot retention system function
Monday, February 8, 2010 9:34 PM
this morning i got a question from a reader regarding strap setups. first off its always nice to know people read my blog. secondly, i love getting random questions. so if you have questions (dumbass questions will result in a swift "go to hell" reply).

"Hey I have been reading your blog for awhile now, and know that you like me still love the way of the past when it was all about mashing and bombing hills. So my question to you is do you or anyone you know mash and bomb hills using the new style of FRS that are out now, like hold fast and such, if so how do they feel? I don’t know about you but I seem to be restricted on what type of shoes fit nice n snug in my current cages set up, and thought the new style of FRS might be nice, but I don’t trick I ride fast and I bomb hills, and I cannot be feeling unsure about my feet being secure. Anyways if you get a chance let me know your opinion as I ride with no one who has ever tried hold fast style straps.

Cheers

(NAME WITHHELD i've always wanted to do that!)"

the single fat strap, though ideal for fixed freestyle, is a little less ideal for bombing hills- and i'll tell you why.

when you're pedaling to gain speed, naturally you pull up on whatever foot retention system you have on your pedals. with the single fat strap you have nothing in the toe portion for your sneaker to hold on to. think of it this way, the more coverage you have on your shoes, the more you have to pull up on. so unless those straps are ridiculously tight, you run the risk of your foot slipping out of the strap. not only that, those things are ridiculously harder to get back on if you lose the foot retention for whatever reason.

(via 14bikeco)

alot of fat strap retention systems arent canted forward (polipo's straps and holdfasts are the only ones that are to my knowledge. homeboy prolly probably loves it when i shamelessly name drop) which i feel is essential to getting back into the straps if you happen to slip out. a totally horizontal strap is very difficult to bet back into! an example of that would be this:

Jake Bombs A Big Hill at 40mph from Patrick Lawler on Vimeo.

*shudder* super dangerous my friend. take into account that this man was utilizing power grips (though a different kind of single strap setup, it shares similarities)- if he were utilizing a fat strap system (which involves a wayyy thicker strap) you could imagine it would be extremely difficult to stick your foot back into it!

dont get me wrong, fat strap setups have their niche and i'm not dissing them not am i saying they are useless. they were developed so that riders dont smack their front wheel with their clips during barspins and for use on platform pedals that give the sole of the sneaker more area to be on. in addition, alot of these fixed freestyle tricks are done at a relatively low speed- the fat strap system is for just foot retention (pulling up on the pedals), not for speed. bottom line: if youre gonna go hella fast, clips are the way to go. if you just need foot retention for low speed application (such as fixed freestyle) fat strap systems have my vote. both applications have their use respectively.

so if you have any questions i can clarify please shoot me an email!

suddenly, i became a fan of whatever the mittens are. i dont really understand how they did these pictures, but there are 2 expainations: 1) a super trampoline, 2) they went to space. their blog is in french- unforunately i only understand german and spanish (which is odd for some short asian kid in college who cant even understand his native tongue but i digress). check them out. someone, give me some answers on how they did this.

SE BMX, are you listening?: RIP PK

(via zlog)
okay, so i know a couple posts down i was praising the pk ripper- i'm a hardcore SE bmx guy, i love the ripper (big ripper, lil ripper, plain ripper, pk ripper, all the rippers). but sometimes i wish they didnt make the thing alu- it jsut wasnt meant for this way of riding. the gussets only strengthen only one part of the tubes, not the entire tube. therefore, it results in people snapping their frames in the same place. if im not mistaken tanner from alohafixed did the same thing. or...someone snapped a pk ripper...i just dont remember who. SE, you need to fix this NOW. there's no shame in making a steel ripper (though that's unconventional).

big bag fetish: transient messenger bag preview

first of all, i own a transient medium hip pack/tool pouch and i love it. the quality of their stuff for their price is an undeniable value. that said, orange 20 bikes is giving us a preview of their venture into fullfledged messenger bags.

check out the secret stash pocket on the side (see the notebook peeking out?)

(via orange twizzle bizzle)
i cant wait for these bags to hit shelves in march. rest assured, theyre tried and tested by messengers and are handmade- not some cookie cutter bag. i'll admit i've thrown around my hip pack in frustration, and it still looks brand new. take my word, transient is good shit.

20 inch mini bikes are always fun to look at. they just look so funny- why cant you just lace a fixed hub on a bmx bike? anyway, this build i actually find good looking. apparently those are hplus rims. i'm a bit hesitant to believe that, but i'm trying to imagine those rime laced to a cub hub. 150,000 square feet of indoor drome goodness. what also makes this awesome is that the idea and drive for the drome came by a non-profit organization: fast track cycling inc. the thing is going to be so huge that it will be able to accommodate other sports as well. it's getting good media attention and i'm sure it'll catch on soon. you can keep track (no pun intended) of the drome here.

hey kiddies! it's now that time of the week/month/whatever, where i post all them edits i have backed up on firefox. irresponsible, maybe; but i kinda like seeing a crap load of various edits in one post.

YU from YU KU$UMOTOh! on Vimeo.

okay, i know i have said this before, and i know alot of people have been saying this, but the more i see Yu ride, the more he looks like wonka. its not just the gorilla talking, its the whole style of riding. however, yu can ride fakie. sorry for a low blow wonka, just saying.

AREACYCLES gnarcotix garage session from Gnarcotixsf on Vimeo.

is that first dude riding a pk ripper? OHHHHHHHH SHIIIIIIIT! it is! i love it when i see pk rippers being destroyed- and you shouldnt be apologizing to the almighty perry kramer (hence the line "sorry PK"), he would love that shit! when i get the money that's going to be my next frameset... for serious.

ZLOG review: Mission Workshop Vandal bag from chris clappe on Vimeo.

theres no real tricks in this one, just an awesome demonstration of the mission workshop vandal. i have praised mission workshop before, and i still stand by my word: mission workshop makes a serious bag. it holds hella stuff and ziggyzloggyzach gives a great demo. oh yeah and mf doom in the bg is awesome (mf doom is the only hip hop i can tolerate).

Midwest Mayhem Main Event from Sam Erickson on Vimeo.

here's a more thorough edit of MWM. it has pregame stuff as well as post game stuff main event stuff. i cant get enough of wonka's wallride, i cant get enough of la marche's nose's, mike's acid drop... midwest mayhem was a great way to kick off 2010.

FAST PACE ZINE: seamoose acid drop from 2020films on Vimeo.

speaking of massive acid drops... andy AKA seamoose (wtf?)attempted one that defies nature. that landing must have sucked for andy's legs... oh and i hella love the song choice.

Its Always Raining In Seattle from Justinavenue on Vimeo.

remember when people used to run 650's? nowadays people are running 26's in the front just for the burliness. i currently run a 650 and dont have a problem with it, but i find it interesting that people are trading their 650s for 26s. i remember when people ran 26's in the front that meant you were to broke to buy a legit 650 hahaha!

Michael Chacon from Stryker LA on Vimeo.

michael chacon exploded onto the scene last year and since then we have never gotten him out of our minds. keo curry may have invented keospins, but michael pretty much perfected it. i know those are strong words (no offense to keo, he will always be a godfather to fixed freestyle), but mike's got spinny tricky's down; and im sure there are people who agree with me on this one.

Peel Sessions 02.04.2010 from John Prolly on Vimeo.

last but not least we have an awesome van, a wonka explosion, stoner metal, and a kicker that seems like a total bitch to ride. seriously, that kicker over that box seems like an awkward thing to ride, but wonka hits it hard. peel sessions always looks fun.

sharp dressed man: Griffin spring/summer collection

griffin 2010 spring summer 5 Griffin 2010 Spring/Summer Collection
(via Hypebeast)
its times like these where i appreciate why hypebeast is still on my rss reader. you may remember that charge bikes had a special edition collaboration that involved a charge plug freestyler. apparently there's supposed to be a jersey in the works:

"The Griffin X Charge fixed gear bike features this season’s cyan blue and white colour pallet and is the first collaborative project we have completed with the bicycle company. Based just a few miles from the Griffin Studio, Charge have surged to the forefront of the urban cycling world, renowned for their domestic named frames such as the duster and juicer, Griffin approached the company to pursue a collaborative project. Cycling is a passion that Jeff and the team in the studio are very much involved in, from borrowing friends bikes when out in Tokyo through to daily commute. Identifying a gap in the market, we wanted to create a cool looking frame for the urban world. The result; Charge’s signature minimalist frame, the Plug, merged with Griffin distinctive design detailing, we even managed to work in a new Griffin camouflage. The bike has had an excellent reception and all 500 Limited Edition bikes were sold to worldwide bike stockists including Wiggle, Evans and the Cycle Surgery before manufacturing began. Due to the great response we are now working on the new range for launch at the end of August.

Following the launch of our fixed gear bike we have teamed up with Woolistic sportswear to design a collaborative cycling jersey. Swiss based knitwear company woolistic have been designing high quality merino cycling jerseys for just 10 years but in this short time have gained an international reputation for the quality and performance of their jerseys. We have mixed the heritage swiss jersey colours into a unique piece crossing over the worlds of both fashion and sport."

it's a little hipster for my taste (and my taste involve hardcore band teeshirts and skated nike sb's), but i dont know, it's looks kinda nice. sneak a peek here.

if you didnt know, prolly works closely with Mishka. i initially thought DART (which the collection began in 2008) meant Death Adders Racing Team, but now it means Death Adders Road and Track. now the DART collection is coming hard with the spring 2010 collection. first with shirts:
if you can remember the spetznaz mkIII, then you know that their shit is quality. well to add to their heavy duty mkIII, for the DART collection they will release this jacket known as the DART Swarm Windbreaker. it will be available in red and navy blue.

now for something i'm psyched for: the DART merino hoodie. jersey pockets. bum thumb holes. longer backend (which is great because my hoodies always find a way to creep up my back sometimes). get this: the colorways are 1) black. 2)harbor blue.....and....3) PROLLY PURPLE. HAHAHAHAHAHA dude.... john, what did you do!?!?! soon enough we're gonna see bruisers in PROLLY PURPLE....

want to get into polo but have no idea how to source supplies for a mallet? here are 2 solutions for your demise. first off, the fixie inc. MO's mallet:

(via cycles for heroes)
made of an HDPE mallet as well as a stiff AL7075-T6 shaft (heh... i said shaft), this this seems super light and super heavy duty. unfortunately, these mallets are ony avail. in europe, but i'm sure someone can get a batch stateside.

now for something more readily available, the MKE polo mallet:

made of basically the same thing, you lose the holes, but gain a paintjob. and as benscycle put it perfectly "Same as you've been getting from the electric company, but you won't go to jail." get to it kiddies, smack some balls- there are no more excuses.
